Leather Holsters for Government-Size 1911s
The Government model is the original full-size 1911: a 5-inch barrel, a full-length grip and an all-steel frame. It is heavy, flat and long, and a well-made leather holster is the traditional way to carry it. Every holster on this page is hand-molded to the exact 5-inch 1911 you choose from genuine leather in our workshop in Türkiye.

Government-Size 1911 at a Glance
- Barrel: 5 in
- Overall length: about 8.5 in
- Weight: about 35–40 oz unloaded for steel-frame models
- Capacity: typically 7+1 or 8+1 in .45 ACP, more in 9mm
- Rail: some models have an accessory rail on the dust cover; others do not
Specs vary by maker and model.
Rail or No Rail?
This is the most important fit question for a 5-inch 1911. A rail changes the shape of the frame under the slide, so a holster molded for a railed 1911 is shaped differently from one for a classic, no-rail 1911. For Colt we mold both versions: choose With Rail or Without Rail. For other makers, choose your exact model, and if your version has a rail and you are unsure, email info@lunaprimestore.com before ordering.
Which Holster for a 5-Inch 1911?
- Classic OWB carry: a thumb-break pancake holster. It pulls the long slide and grip tight to your body, and the strap secures a cocked-and-locked hammer.
- Range days: a two-slot or three-slot OWB holster keeps the long, heavy pistol stable on the belt.
- All-day carry of a heavy pistol: a shoulder holster takes 2 to 2.5 pounds of steel off your belt. The version with a magazine holder balances the rig with two spare magazines.
- Field and hunting: the full-flap holster protects the finish from rain and brush.
- Concealed carry: IWB works because the 1911 is thin, but the 5-inch slide is long. Many owners carry a Commander or Officer-size 1911 for concealment.
