Leather Holsters for Red Dot Pistols: What Fits and What to Look For

Short answer: yes, you can carry a pistol with a red dot in a leather holster, but it has to be an optic-cut holster. A standard leather holster is molded around the bare slide, and its front edge or sweat guard can press against the optic, push it off zero or stop the pistol from seating fully. An optic-cut holster leaves the top of the slide open around the sight, so the pistol seats properly and the optic is never under pressure.

Most new pistols now ship optics-ready, so this is quickly becoming the most common holster question we get. Here is what to look for.

Why a Standard Holster May Not Work with a Red Dot

A red dot sits on top of the slide, usually just in front of the rear sight. That puts it right where a traditional holster’s mouth and sweat guard sit. When the holster is not cut for it, three things can happen:

  • The pistol does not seat fully. The optic hits the leather before the slide is all the way down, so retention is weaker than it should be.
  • The optic gets pressure on every draw. Over time that can loosen the mounting screws or knock the dot off zero.
  • The draw snags. The optic catches the holster mouth on the way out, which is the last thing you want under stress.

What to Look For in a Leather Holster for a Red Dot

1. A real optic cut

The leather around the top of the slide should be cut back far enough that the optic body and window never touch the holster. Our OWB 3-Slot Holster and IWB Sport Butterfly Holster are both cut this way.

2. A holster molded to your exact pistol

Retention in a leather holster comes from the leather being molded tightly around the slide, trigger guard and dust cover. That only works when the holster is made for your specific model. Every Luna Prime holster is hand-molded to the model you choose, from more than 150 pistols, including optics-ready models like the Canik METE SFx, TP9 SFx and Prime Radian.

3. Check your optic’s size

Most compact and full-size carry optics fit a standard optic cut. If you run an unusually tall or large optic, or one with a shroud, ask the maker before ordering. (For our holsters: email info@lunaprimestore.com with your pistol and optic.)

4. The right carry position

  • OWB (outside the waistband): the easiest way to carry a red dot pistol. The optic sits away from your body and the draw is straightforward. Good for range, open carry and duty-size pistols.
  • IWB (inside the waistband): works well too, but the optic adds a little height at the top of the slide. Wear it at 3–4 o’clock and use a sturdy belt.

5. Plan for co-witness sights

Many shooters fit taller suppressor-height iron sights so they can still aim if the optic fails. A tall front sight needs room in the holster too. Mention it when you order a molded holster.

Leather vs Kydex for Red Dot Carry

Kydex holsters for optics-ready pistols are common, and they work. Leather has its own advantages: it is quiet, it does not rub the finish off your slide, and it molds to your body over time, which makes all-day carry more comfortable. The trade-off is that leather needs a short break-in and basic care. If you are weighing the two, read our Kydex vs Leather guide.

Caring for a Leather Holster with an Optic-Equipped Pistol

  • Do not force the pistol in. A new leather holster is snug. Break it in slowly with the pistol unloaded rather than pushing hard on the slide or the optic.
  • Keep the lens clean. Leather can leave fine dust on the optic window, especially when new. A lens cloth once in a while is enough.
  • Do not use conditioner inside the holster. Oils soften the leather where it grips the pistol and reduce retention. Condition the outside only.

Our Optic-Cut Leather Holsters

FAQ

Can I carry a red dot pistol in a normal leather holster?

Only if the holster leaves room for the optic. If the leather touches the optic, the pistol may not seat fully and the optic can lose zero. Choose an optic-cut holster.

Does an optic cut make the holster less secure?

No. Retention comes from the leather being molded around the slide, trigger guard and frame, not from the area where the optic sits.

Will my holster fit if I add a red dot later?

If you think you will add an optic, buy an optic-cut holster now. A holster molded without the cut may not clear the optic later.

Will an optic-cut holster fit my pistol without an optic?

Yes. The cut is simply open space above the slide; the pistol is held by the molded fit.
